Final Treatment!

(Castellano sigue abajo)

Last week marked the end of the originally-scheduled chemotherapy treatments.  We wish to express our heartfelt appreciation to all who have "accompanied" us through these past few months.  President Thomas S. Monson, prophet and president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, has said, "It is more blessed to give than to receive".  I believe that statement.  Therefore, I humbly declare that I have a most blessed group of friends and family.  You have all given so much.  Your generous acts of kindness have reminded me of the Lord's promise found in Malachi 3:10 in the Old Testament:

"Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it."

"There shall not be room enough to receive it."  I have recognized and felt the Lord's fulfillment of this promise many times in my life.  Not until now have I ever perceived the feeling of literally not being able to receive it all.  Your many kindnesses have gone on to overflowing.  In none of this do I intend to infer that I feel deserving or worthy of your letters, phone calls, text messages, emails, skype conferences, personal visits, prayers, fasts, kind thoughts, very tasty meals, and other selfless and often anonymous acts of service.  I simply wish to acknowledge the hand of the Lord as He has blessed both givers and receivers in fulfillment of holy promises.

As I mentioned earlier, the chemotherapy treatments have ended.  I will continue visiting the hospital on a daily basis for another two weeks or so.  During these visits I will receive prescribed medications as well as blood products as needed (thanks again to those who routinely donate blood; I suspect that we will always have those among us who need it).  Soon my bone marrow should resume its normal function--producing blood cells.  With the previous three consolidation chemotherapy treatments, as soon as the bone marrow began to recover, I would return for the next round of chemotherapy.  This time, however, with no additional chemotherapy scheduled, we hope that my blood counts will simply increase to normal levels--hurray!  Then, when any of you have need for anything noted in the prior paragraph, you know who to call:).

I conclude as I began, thanking each of you for all you have done.  My heart is full of gratitude.  You have continuously elevated my thoughts to Him who is the great Giver.  I know that God lives.  I know that God gave His Son and that the Son gave His life--all so that those who believe might "have everlasting life" (John 3:16).  I hope to become increasingly aware of and grateful for the sanctity of life.  As we approach Christmas, the last line of The Living Christ: The Testimony of the Apostles comes to mind: "God be thanked for the matchless gift of His divine Son."

Merry Christmas to all!

¡Tratamiento Final!

A question and an answer

(Castellano sigue abajo)

Recently, someone that I dearly love emailed a very insightful question based on the following scripture found in the Book of Mormon:

"And I have been supported under trials and troubles of every kind, yea, and in all manner of afflictions; yea, God has delivered me from prison, and from bonds, and from death; yea, and I do put my trust in him, and he will still deliver me." Alma 36:27

"Would you be willing to share…some thoughts on some of the ways you feel you have been supported by the Lord through this trial?"

I felt to share here the response that I gave a few days ago:
  • When one understands that God has a Plan, he/she automatically can feel supported in "trials and troubles of every kind"
  • As I have learned of the Savior's central role in the plan, I have felt strengthened through the power of the atonement.  "And the Lord provided for them that they should hunger not, neither should they thirst; yea, and he also gave them strength, that they should suffer no manner of afflictions, save it were swallowed up in the joy of Christ." (Alma 31:38).
  • Jesus Christ is indeed the great Deliverer.  I know that He can "deliver" me from cancer.  He has all power (over prison, bonds, life, death).  Whether or not He does has to do with His will.  If healing (meaning I no longer have cancer) falls within His will for me, I will find healing through the power of the atonement after all I can do.
  • I have felt supported by the Lord as His doctrine has sunk more deeply into my heart.  I know that I could possibly be "appointed unto death" (D&C 42:48).  I have felt wonderfully at peace with the idea that "healing" could also mean that I become freed from this imperfect and mortal body that has developed a cancer.  Given that I believe that Jesus Christ has delivered me from death, how could I demand that He postpone that deliverance until a more convenient time for my family and me (and so many others whom we love)?
  • I put my trust in Him.  I trust His timing.  I trust that He will take care of my family according to His many promises to us through our covenants with Him.  I trust that as I repent of my many sins, I will feel of His forgiveness and His lovingkindness through the atonement.  Putting my trust in Him connotes obeying Him.  As I obey Him, He will continue to deliver me (still deliver me as per verse 27).
  • I have also felt supported by the many people God has placed along my life's path at this time.  I have felt the love, kindness, sacrifice, faith, and hope of my dear companion, children, missionaries, family, ward members and others.  Prayers have ascended to heaven on our behalf across multiple time zones.  I have witnessed others strengthening their relationship with the Lord as they contemplate and react to this temporary condition.
  • I love Him and trust Him.  I know that His plan for me far exceeds any plan of mine for me.  I know that as I submit my will to His, I can inherit all that He has--no one else can promise that.  This truth makes the submission perfectly safe.
As for an update on treatments, I recently finished the third of four consolidation chemotherapy treatments.  I will enjoy two to three more weeks at home in advance of the final treatment.  We continue making daily trips to the hospital for medications and regular blood transfusions.  We give thanks for wonderful facilities, doctors, nurses, medications, and other means available to bless our lives during this time.

In stark contrast to our experiences here, over the past few days we have read about and viewed photos of the devastation in Tacloban, Philippines (and surrounding areas) caused by one of the most powerful typhoons in recorded history.  Events such as this help us feel grateful for our little experience with cancer.  Our knowledge of an overarching plan authored by a loving, all-knowing, and all-powerful God helps us understand both situations.  So, what to do when death and destruction surround us (Tacloban), or when a life-threatening illness faces us or someone we love?  Jesus Christ asks a similar question and gives the answer.  "Therefore, what manner of men ought ye to be?  Verily I say unto you, even as I am." (3 Nephi 27:27; Matthew 5:48)  We do as He would do.  How do we know what He would do?  We study His life in the scriptures and we listen to modern day prophets and apostles who know Him, testify of Him, and have become very much like Him.

It seems to me that regardless of the individual struggles we all face, or will face, we must be about developing the attributes of Christ.  I know that as we do, we will be strengthened and comforted.  As we feel that strength and comfort, we will automatically desire the same for those we love.  As we endeavor to strengthen and comfort others, additional help and healing will flow into our own lives.  For "he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it." (Matt 10:39)

We love you all.  All is well.

(Mateo 10:39)

Los amamos a todos. Está todo bien.

You can't see it, but it indeed exists

(Castellano sigue abajo)

Some have asked "why do they continue to treat you with chemotherapy if the cancer went into remission?"  Remission with leukemia essentially means that the initial "induction treatment/s" of chemotherapy eliminated the leukemic blast cells from the cellular level.  The doctors have indicated that the leukemia still exists on the molecular level, where we can no longer see it with our current medical instrumentation.  They know this from past experience with other patients.  When they have stopped treatment after reaching initial remission, they have found that the leukemia returns in most cases.  Over time they have learned that to optimize the chances of cure with chemotherapy for my particular type of leukemia, they must administer four additional, specific chemotherapy treatments.  These treatments are designed to beat down the leukemia that we can no longer see.

This follows patterns we see in the scriptures:  "faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true." (Alma 32:21)  True faith always leads to action.  We find application in Mosiah 24:16-20.  Alma and his people found themselves in bondage to the Lamanites.  Their acts of faith included pouring out their hearts to God and "submitting cheerfully and with patience to all the will of the Lord" (verse 15)  Then we read, "And it came to pass that so great was their faith and their patience that the voice of the Lord came unto them again, saying: Be of good comfort, for on the morrow I will deliver you out of bondage.  Now it came to pass that Alma and his people in the night-time gathered their flocks together, and also of their grain; yea, even all the night-time were they gathering their flocks together." (v 16-18)  What did they hope for that they could not see?  Deliverance from bondage by morning.  After a time of waking up every morning to inescapable taskmasters and tasks, because of the promise of the Lord they believed that the next morning would differ from all the rest.  The action?  Not knowing exactly how the Lord would deliver them, they gathered flocks and grains all night.  Can you imagine what the hardened taskmasters would do to them come morning light--flocks, grains and families gathered together like they intended to leave?  People of fear would have succumbed to the temptation to wait until morning to see how the Lord would deliver them before taking a chance on gathering their belongings.  People of faith acted all night according to their belief in a God of truth who had promised deliverance.  The resulting miracle?   "And in the morning the Lord caused a deep sleep to come upon the Lamanites, yea, and all their task-masters were in a profound sleep.  And Alma and his people departed into the wilderness..."(v 19-20)  Miracles follow acts of faith; they do not precede them.

Therefore, given that we hope in the healing power of the Atonement, we continue calling upon the Lord.  We continue serious treatments aimed at curing the cancer that medical professionals can no longer detect.  We do not know exactly how the Lord will deliver us, but we feel complete confidence in His promises.  We remember that the miracle of healing must coincide with the Lord's will for us to eventually see with our own eyes what we can now only see through the eye of faith.  We thank all of you who have engaged in so many kind, faithful acts with a "hope for things which are not seen, which are true."

All is well.

More gratitude give me

(Castellano sigue abajo)

As most of you know, we spent six and a half weeks undergoing treatment to reach a "remission" of this cancer.  Then we had a few days at home before returning for what they call a "consolidation".  The consolidation consisted of 6 days of chemotherapy as an inpatient followed by about 3 weeks as an outpatient.  During the outpatient period, we traveled to the clinic (located at LDS Hospital where I have received all treatments) nearly every day for about 10 days.  Each day the wonderful nurses administered medications and checked to see if I needed any blood products.  After a while my blood counts began to increase--a sign that the bone marrow performs its normal functions.  Once my blood counts reached pre-determined levels, the doctors sent me home for a few uninterrupted days with family and friends--hooray!  Now that we know the "consolidation routine", we will repeat it three more times.  Given the span of days for the first consolidation, it appears that we will follow this routine through the end of the year.  I find myself now at day three of the second consolidation treatment.  If all goes well I will return home after just three more days.

I give special thanks to my sweetheart Heidi for many hours of remís (the term used for a private taxi in Argentina) service as well as countless hours at home during the past three weeks.  At the hospital I get teams of wonderful people assigned to me both day and night; from nurses and their assistants (CNAs) to doctors and their assistants (PAs).  I have a kitchen staff who graciously takes food orders, prepares the food, and delivers it nice and warm to my room.  Yet others take my calls whenever I press a button and send my nurse to help me.  When I go home, Heidi takes care of me almost single-handedly for the same 24-hour periods.  I say almost because invariably someone slips by with either a hot meal or one we can easily place in the freezer for a future day.  Or little yard fairies show up and help keep things looking nice outside.  Etc.:)

I continue to recognize the divinity of Genesis 2:18 "And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him."  I have long believed that we should apply the scriptures to ourselves.  This one applies very, very personally to me--for it's really not good for me to be alone and the Lord absolutely made a wonderful help meet for me!

Now a quick thank you to those who helped our family have the annual Utah State Fair experience with our beloved dairy goats.  I've included here a short TV spot as run by the Utah State Fair this year that made Seth and a handful of our goats...well, famous in our minds!

Three of the goats pictured in the ad indeed went on to win Grand Champion in their competitions.  Our boys Quinn and Seth deserve much credit for a lot of extra effort with the goat chores.

As always, all is well.

Enjoying time with family

(Castellano sigue abajo)

We now enter a second week as an outpatient.  I sure hope not to wear out the family!  The doctors will allow me to continue as an outpatient through the end of September as long as I don't fever or have some other complication.  So far so good.

This time at home with family has helped me reflect on the healing that comes through the doctrines of marriage and family.  As I spend time in the hospital every day, the wonderful nurses do their part for healing with medications and blood transfusions.  As I spend the rest of the day and night here with family, I see the many ways that families serve, uplift, strengthen and love one another.  Surely righteous interactions with our loved ones lead to the blessings of the Lord.  Challenges in family life lead to opportunities for conversation, change, humility, and the blessings of the Lord.

Interactions with many of you also remind me that strength and comfort come as we keep the second great commandment to love our neighbor as ourselves.  I hope that you have all recognized the blessings that have come to you and your families as you have demonstrated your love for our family.  We continue to feel so grateful for you.  We feel very uplifted by you.

1 Nephi 16:28-30 reminds me of my need for faith, diligence and heed to the Lord's indications.  It also instructs me in the plainness of the Lord's ways.  A "new writing" reminds me that I can expect and look forward to ongoing communications with the Lord.  Sometimes He takes us to high places; places that would never occur to us to go if not for our heed to His words.

1 Nephi 17:1-3 calls to my remembrance that many others have "[traveled] and [waded] through much affliction"; they have kept the commandments; and they have thereby been nourished, strengthened, and had ways provided for them to do as He commands.  Because they have trod these types of paths before, I have great hope and confidence in our, and your, ability to do so.  I know that the scriptures were written by prophets of old for me, right now.  I love the word of God.

We look forward to a great month.  Thanks again for all you do.  We sure have enjoyed many interactions with you--both electronic and personal.

Remission!!!

(Castellano sigue abajo)

Last time I mentioned a bone marrow biopsy.  The doctors received and interpreted the results of that biopsy this week.  They have officially declared that we have a solid remission of the leukemia.  This allows for continued chemotherapy treatments, called consolidation chemotherapy.  We will undergo four total consolidation chemotherapy treatments.  Each of those requires about 6 days in the hospital.  If all goes well, we will enjoy a few weeks at home between each hospital stay.  During the weeks at home, we will likely make daily trips to the hospital.  They will check our blood counts, administer medications, and give blood transfusions as necessary.  We will thus live our lives for the next four to five months.

We want to thank all of you again for your faith and prayers.  Many of you have asked if you should donate blood, or sign up as a bone marrow donor.  It seems consistent with my understanding of faith, a principle of action and of power, that one, if able, would donate blood so that others might live.  Rather than praying that those who need blood might receive it (as if God worked by magic), we would donate our blood and then pray that it can bless someone before it expires.  I have needed many transfusions to this point and more will surely follow.  I appreciate your willingness to replenish where I have depleted.  Regarding becoming a bone marrow donor, I have become familiar with cases where a bone marrow transplant represents nearly the only chance for survival.  In order to receive a transplant, the doctors must find a "match" for the patient amongst those in the donor pool.  The more types of bone marrow in the pool, the more likely those who need a transplant will have a match.  Hence, yes, if you feel to become a bone marrow donor, please act on those feelings now.

I wish to address another type of remission.  With this cancer of the bone marrow, one hopes that medical treatments will help achieve its remission, and eventually its cure.  The patient has individual responsibilities to support the competent medical professionals' care.  These include eating full meals, drinking adequate amounts of water, breathing deeply, and exercising.  In the Great Plan of Happiness, we find the term "remission of sin".  I have come to more fully appreciate the process by which we achieve this remission, the promises of a loving Heavenly Father relative to this remission, and the sacrifices of His Only Begotten Son that make a remission of sin possible.  Consider the following scriptural passages:

Matthew 26:28 "For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins."  I know that it is only through the Atonement of Jesus Christ that we can receive a remission of our sins.

Enos 1:2 "And I will tell you of the wrestle which I had before God, before I received a remission of my sins."  I know that as we cry unto the Lord for our own souls and exercise faith in Christ, our guilt can be "swept away", even as that of Enos.

Helaman 14:13 "And if ye believe on his name ye will repent of all your sins, that thereby ye may have a remission of them through his merits."  True faith in Christ always results in repentance.  True repentance brings a remission of sin "through his merits".  Faith and repentance, along with sincere prayer to the Father, represent some of our personal responsibilities if we desire a remission.

Mosiah 4:11-12 "And again I say unto you as I have said before, that as ye have come to the knowledge of the glory of God, or if ye have known of his goodness and have tasted of his love, and have received a remission of your sins, which causeth such exceedingly great joy in your souls, even so I would that ye should remember, and always retain in remembrance, the greatness of God, and your own nothingness, and his goodness and long-suffering towards you, unworthy creatures, and humble yourselves even in the depths of humility, calling on the name of the Lord daily, and standing steadfastly in the faith of that which is to come, which was spoken by the mouth of the angel.  And behold, I say unto you that if ye do this ye shall always rejoice, and be filled with the love of God, and always retain a remission of your sins; and ye shall grow in the knowledge of the glory of him that created you, or in the knowledge of that which is just and true."  More personal requirements with the attendant blessings.

Mosiah 4:26 "for the sake of retaining a remission of your sins from day to day, that ye may walk guiltless before God--I would that ye should impart of your substance to the poor, every man according to that which he hath, such as feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and administering to their relief, both spiritually and temporally, according to their wants."  As much as I wish to retain a remission of bone marrow cancer from day to day, no medical or worldly prescription exists to ensure that temporal blessing.  I give thanks to God for scriptures that teach me precisely how to obtain a remission of my many sins, and yet others to instruct me how to retain that remission from day to day until I enter into the rest of the Lord.  Oh how I love the blessings of the Great Plan of Redemption.  Blessings that come according to the timing and the will of an all-knowing, loving, kind and merciful God.

If you have read this far, you have endured well:)  All is well.  We love you.

Home sweet home!

(Castellano sigue abajo)

After six and a half weeks in the hospital, we will now enjoy about a week at home.  Beginning late last week my blood counts began to rise.  By Monday I had met all of the medical requirements for the doctors to discharge me.  I express thanks for the continuous service of both doctors and nurses.

I will return to the hospital on Friday for a bone marrow biopsy.  Then we'll enjoy a weekend at home. On Tuesday afternoon I will return to the hospital for a 6-day chemotherapy treatment.

"And, if you keep my commandments and endure to the end you shall have eternal life, which gift is the greatest of all the gifts of God" (D & C 14:7).  Thanks to all of you we continue to do our best to endure to the end of every day.  Then we put together days and begin to endure to the end of every week.  May we all endure, making and keeping sacred covenants, such that we lay hold of the "greatest of all the gifts of God".

All is well.

¡Hogar dulce hogar!

Personal reflections on eternal truths

(Castellano sigue abajo)

The scriptures plainly teach that God is the same yesterday, today and forever.  Hence, since He was a God of miracles yesterday, He has not ceased to be a God of miracles.  We, as a family, know that He is truly a God of miracles because we have lived them--most recently on our mission in Argentina and now as we face leukemia and its treatments.

We know that the Lord Jesus Christ has the power to heal all of all.  This healing power flows from the power of the Atonement.  3 Nephi 17:6-9 "And he said unto them: Behold, my bowels are filled with compassion towards you.  Have ye any that are sick among you?  Bring them hither.  Have ye any that are lame, or blind, or halt, or maimed, or leprous, or that are withered, or that are deaf, or that are afflicted in any manner?  Bring them hither and I will heal them, for I have compassion upon you; my bowes are filled with mercy.  For I perceive that ye desire that I should show unto you what I have done unto your brethren at Jerusalem, for I see that your faith is sufficient that I should heal you.  And it came to pass that when he had thus spoken, all the multitude, with one accord, did go forth with their sick and their afflicted, and their lame, and with their blind, and with their dumb, and with all them that were afflicted in any manner; and he did heal them every one as they were brought forth unto him."  Surely this phrase "afflicted in any manner" would include leukemia, and whatever ails you and anyone you know.  We recognize that we must demonstrate "faith sufficient" that He should heal us.  We once again thank each of you for your acts of faith (sincere prayer, fasting, temple attendance, and many other faith-filled acts of service on our behalf).  We continue to do all that we know to do to demonstrate "faith sufficient" that He should heal us.  Knowing that He can heal us, we have felt it appropriate to plead for physical healing.

"Thy will be done".  While we know that God is a God of miracles; and we know that He can heal us; we also recognize that we have no right to demand healing, rather we must be "willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon [us], even as a child doth submit to his father" (Mosiah 3:19).  As we think about the promises of the Lord to his missionaries (Joseph and Sidney in the verse I'll quote with application to Elder Austin Argyle), Doctrine and Covenants 100:1 comes to mind: "your families are well; they are in mine hands, and I will do with them as seemeth me good; for in me there is all power."  Given that God is all knowing, and that he "doeth not anything save it be for the benefit of the world" (2 Nephi 26:24), we feel completely at peace in His hands with whatever seemeth Him good.  Finally, the Savior himself, our great Example, "Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done" (Luke 22:42).  Certainly the Savior, of any who has ever lived on the earth, would deserve the granting of a personal request--particularly in light of what He faced at that moment in Gethsemane.  Nevertheless, He submitted his will to that of the Father.  As the Lord asked the Prophet Joseph at Liberty Jail, "The Son of Man hath descended below them all.  Art thou greater than he" (D&C 122:8)?  We answer with all the humility, love, and desire not to shrink that we can muster--no!

We therefore continue to thank you all for your faithful pleadings with the Lord on our behalf.  We know that many of you, along with us, pray for the blessing of healing.  We invite you all to always add to that plea, "thy will be done".  We do not know the meaning of all things, but we do know that no other blessing will exceed the blessing that comes according to His will.

Regarding our current medical standing, in just the past couple of days we have started to see rising blood counts.  If these counts continue to rise; we do not experience fevers; and the doctors can remove the medications that we have received for some time now, they may soon discharge us from the hospital.  We would then return after a few days at home for a bone marrow biopsy to determine whether or not we are officially in remission.  We feel deeply grateful for doctors, nurses and others who give the very best medical care they can every day, and every night.

Thanks again to all for all you have done.  We love you.  All is well.

Thanks to all

All,

(Castellano sigue abajo)

Shane here.  I wish to give a big thank you to Anika for posting to the blog to this point.  I'd also like to thank Martin Cornelli for the translation.  As many of you know, Anika will soon leave home to attend Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.  We will miss her dearly.  Given that she will become very anxiously engaged in many great causes, I have determined to write on occasion so as to keep you all up to date.

I'd like to thank the many, many people who have prayed, fasted, and served our family in many other ways.  I have had many wonderful days in the hospital—meaning that I often do not feel the painful side effects so often associated with chemotherapy.  I have often become aware that my good days correlate with your acts of faith.  Thank you!

Thanks for allowing me to share scriptures that have deepened in meaning in recent times:

2 Nephi 26:24 "He doeth not anything save it be for the benefit of the world; for he loveth the world, even that he layeth down his own life that he may draw all men unto him.  Wherefore, he commandeth none that they shall not partake of his salvation."  I know that He does all things for our benefit.  I know that He laid down His life that I might live again.

2 Nephi 26:33 "For none of these iniquities come of the Lord; for he doeth that which is good among the children of men; and he doeth nothing save it be plain unto the children of men; and inviteth them all to come unto him and partake of his goodness"  I know that He does "that which is good among us, and I give thanks for His goodness.  I know that all that He does can be plain unto us.  We can understand plainly as we strive for eyes to see, ears to hear, and hearts to understand—especially as we come unto Him.

Mosiah 4:5-7 "For behold, if the knowledge of the goodness of God at this time has awakened you to a sense of your nothingness, and your worthless and fallen state—I say unto you, if ye have come to a knowledge of the goodness of God, and his matchless power, and his wisdom, and his patience, and his long-suffering towards the children of men; and also, the atonement which has been prepared from the foundation of the world, that thereby salvation might come to him that should put his trust in the Lord, and should be diligent in keeping his commandments, and continue in the faith even unto the end of his life, I mean the life of the mortal body—I say, that this is the man who receiveth salvation, through the atonement which was prepared from the foundation of the world for all mankind"  Thank you for putting your trust in the Lord, and for your diligence in keeping his commandments, and continuing in faith.  We love you and thank you for your faithful examples.

Matthew 4:19 "And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." I know that one of the ways that I can "continue in the faith even unto the end of [my] life" is to become a "fisher of men". I hope to always remember my covenant obligation to share what I know to be true—"at all times, and in all things, and in all places."

As for a medical update, after much study, pondering, and prayer (they frown on me fasting for now :)), Heidi and I have felt a peace about continuing chemotherapy treatments. For us, this does not mean that we would not opt for a bone marrow transplant later on; it just means that for now, the Lord would have us continue our current course. Perhaps for next time, we'll share a little more about what we have learned of "Thy will be done" and insights from Elder Neal A. Maxwell who battled leukemia during the final years of his sacred life—even "A Disciple's Life."

We love you all. All is well.

To Transplant or Not to Transplant

(Castellano sigue abajo)

That is the question!

But a scripture first off:

2 Nephi 4:19-23:

"And when I desire to rejoice, my heart groaneth because of my sins; nevertheless, I know in whom I have trusted.

My God hath been my support; he hath led me through mine afflictions in the wilderness; and he hath preserved me upon the waters of the great deep.

He hath filled me with his love, even unto the consuming of my flesh.

He hath confounded mine enemies, unto the causing of them to quake before me.

Behold, he hath heard my cry by day, and he hath given me knowledge by visions in the night-time."

Well, folks—Round 2 is done. They unhooked Dad from the chemo Tuesday afternoon and will do another bone marrow biopsy in three to four weeks. With that, they are again looking for an empty bone marrow. Right now, his hospital stay has extended till the end of August.

(Just a side note: if you're wondering what "stage" of cancer Dad is in, leukemia differs from other cancers in that it isn't measured in stages. What they are calling Dad is an "intermediate risk" patient.)

So the next big step is deciding whether to continue with chemo or to go the bone marrow transplant route. Mom and Dad are studying the research and making a decision together this week. They'll let the doctors know what they want sometime next week. They trust that the Lord will guide them to choose what is best for our family so we can learn all that He intends for us to learn.

Till then, all is well! We feel very blessed—we're so grateful for your prayers, thoughts, visits, and service. Thank you!

Anika

Trasplantar o No Trasplantar

¡Gracias!

Anika

Special Treat

(Castellano sigue abajo)

Special treat today! Words directly from Dad!

1 Nephi 21:5: "...my God shall be my strength."  I know that through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, we can all receive strength beyond our own.

Verse 13: "...for the Lord hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted." I know that we will all pass through many kinds of afflictions.  As we search the scriptures, we can know that He will comfort and extend mercy to all, and to each, who experience afflictions.

Verse 16: "Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me."  We need never feel alone, in the dark, or without hope (Satan's desire).  I know that the Savior, through His suffering, knows our suffering perfectly.  He knows perfectly how to succor us in our every moment of need.  He remembers us always as He indeed did "graven [you and me] upon the palms of [His] hands."

Verse 26: "...all flesh shall know that I, the Lord, am thy Savior and thy Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob."  If we will, I know that we may come to know Him better than we now know Him—through the things that we suffer.

I don't know if you did this as you read Dad's words, but I totally heard him in my head—Sunday School/zone conference all over :) I am so grateful for a father who loves the Word of God and is able to bear strong testimony of its truthfulness.

And now for medical updates.

Dad started a second round of chemo yesterday. It is the same deal as the first, 24/7, 7-day drip. He will be staying at LDS Hospital for the time being. He'll be released as soon as his white blood count is high enough.

Dad is still feeling very well. He calls his room his office, goes for lots of walks, and has meaningful conversations with everyone (he's not one to stick to pleasantries; right from the start, he set a goal to have these meaningful conversations, asking questions, seeking information, sharing insight)—in short, he is doing really well, ever himself :)

Visitors are welcome.  Dad prefers daytime visits, but will take you in the evening if that's when you're able to come.  Because he is immunocompromised, only healthy people are allowed to visit.  Just check in with the nurses in the east wing of the 8th floor at LDS Hospital.

Regalo Especial

Goodbye, Capillus

(Castellano sigue abajo)

Matthew 10:30

"But the very hairs of your head are all numbered."

Alma 40:23

"The soul shall be restored to the body, and the body to the soul; yea, and every limb and joint shall be restored to its body; yea, even a hair of the head shall not be lost; but all things shall be restored to their proper and perfect frame."

Doctrine and Covenants 9:14

"Stand fast in the work wherewith I have called you, and a hair of your head shall not be lost, and you shall be lifted up at the last day. Amen."

Leviticus 14:9

"But it shall be on the seventh day, that he shall shave all his hair off his head..."

As you may have gathered from the scriptures today, it happened:

Dad had his head shaved :)

("Capillus" being the Latin word for hair)

Why the smiley face? Well, first of all, he looks just as handsome as ever. Secondly, it's one step closer to him coming home. Thirdly, he gets the visual on a childhood scar he's never seen before—he was pretty excited about that.

Fourthly, and perhaps most importantly, the scriptures Dad chose for this entry remind me of God's infinite and perfect love for us. God knows who we are. He knows us as individuals. He cares for us as individuals. Not a hair shall be lost. When things seem to be slipping through our fingers, when our troubles loom overhead, when we feel overwhelmed and on the brink of darkness—if we will reach out to our Heavenly Father through prayer, study, and obedience, He will remind us of His love. And as we prove faithful, He will uphold His promise: "He that overcometh shall inherit all things..." (Revelation 21:7)

So whether you are literally or figuratively losing your hair, remember that God loves you with an infinite and perfect love. You are not lost to Him. With Him, all things are possible.

"Howbeit the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaven" (Judges 16:22).

There is always hope.

(Jueces 16:22)

Siempre hay esperanza.

Hellos All Around

(Castellano sigue abajo)

Hello, hello, hello! Welcome to Be Not Afraid—Only Believe, the blog my parents decided to start—or delegated to me to start—in order to keep everyone informed as to my dad and this new chapter in our lives. If you're looking for the basics, check out the second page on the sidebar on the right ("L" is for Leukemia). That will give you a run-down of what's happened. You can also check out the page for this blog's title, Mark 5:36.

But besides updates on how Dad is doing (he is great, by the way), the purpose of this blog is to record our journey. To record the lessons we've learned, the blessings fulfilled, the faith proven, and the miracles witnessed.

So why not start with a few lessons we've already learned?

From the beginning, what struck me the most was the faith and strength of my parents. Not only have they been positive and uplifting, but they are happy. When we go to visit Dad, it's not upsetting or depressing or anything akin—we have a pretty great time. In fact, there hasn't been a time when I haven't left feeling better. If you know Dad, you know what I mean. He just knows. He knows his purpose. He knows how to be happy. He loves God, he loves the Gospel, and he loves sharing that with other people.

Mom has been nothing but positive. She keeps us updated (we're not always able to go the hospital with her) and takes us to visit whenever she can. Just when I imagine others would buckle under the stress, Mom finds another reserve of strength and peace and just keeps going. She has been an incredible example of strength to me.

We've also learned that people are just good. They innately want to help and give and never think of receiving anything in return. To everyone who has offered a hand, has given a hug, has said a prayer—we all feel an immeasurable sense of gratitude. There truly is strength in numbers. The Lord has greatly blessed us by surrounding our family with good people who are so willing to lend a hand. Thank you.

Dad also wants to be sure to include a scripture in these posts. Today, it's 2 Nephi 2:24-25: "But behold, all things have been done in the wisdom of him who knoweth all things. Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy."

God truly knows all things, and this trial has come to our family at this time for a reason. We trust Him and are eager to discover the ways in which we will grow closer to each other and just as importantly, become more like Him as we endure faithfully. And while we're at it, we definitely plan on being happy :)

¡Hola, hola, hola!
