To all those whom we love, and to others whom we have yet to meet, and love just the same:
We did not anticipate writing again so soon. Nor did we assume that we would never need to resume the story. This past week we learned that the leukemia has returned. Due to diligent follow up by our medical team, we gratefully identified the recurrence early. The team has proposed a new plan of attack, which gratefully included a few days to prepare ourselves for this next phase of the journey.
What we know thus far:
First, after recurrence, a bone marrow transplant represents the only curative treatment option (according to the world of modern medicine).
Second, we will receive a chemotherapy treatment aimed at putting the leukemia once again into remission. The bone marrow transplant depends on complete remission.
Third, as we strive for remission, the medical team will advance a couple of the matching bone marrow donors. They will work to have the transplant ready at the appropriate time.
Fourth, I will receive the transplant.
Fifth, well, I commit to writing more by the time we get to transplant!
In my studies this morning I came across a couple of verses that describe part of this experience:
In the Book of Mormon, Alma 8:18 describes how the Lord instructed the prophet Alma to go about his goal "by another way". You may remember that we had two options originally as we sought a cure to the acute myeloid leukemia--a chemotherapy option and a bone marrow transplant option. After many days of study, pondering, and prayer we felt to opt for the chemotherapy route. Now, similar to Alma (no comparison between Shane & Alma!), the Lord has commanded that we try another way--bone marrow transplant. Later in the chapter we read, "Now this was done that the Lord might show forth his power in them." We believe that as we pay close attention during this process, we will have eyes to see the Lord's power--both throughout the journey and in the final outcomes.

aún hemos de conocer, y amar de la misma manera:
No anticipamos escribir nuevamente tan pronto. Tampoco
asumimos que nunca tendríamos que resumir la historia. Esta semana que pasó nos
enteramos que la leucemia ha vuelto. Debido al seguimiento diligente de nuestro
equipo médico, afortunadamente identificamos la reaparición temprana. El equipo
ha propuesto un nuevo plan de ataque, el cual afortunadamente incluyó unos
pocos días para prepararnos para esta nueva fase del viaje.
Lo que sabemos hasta ahora:
Primero, después de la reaparición, un trasplante
de médula ósea representa la única opción curativa de tratamiento (acorde al
mundo de la medicina moderna).
Segundo, recibiremos un tratamiento de
quimioterapia dirigido a poner la leucemia nuevamente en remisión. El
trasplante de médula ósea depende de una remisión completa.
Tercero, al esforzarnos por una remisión, el equipo
médico adelantará un par de donantes de médula ósea compatibles. Ellos
trabajarán para tener el trasplante listo para el momento apropiado.
Cuarto, recibiré el trasplante.
Quinto, bien, ¡me comprometo a escribir más para
cuando lleguemos al trasplante!
En mis estudios esta mañana me encontré con un par
de versículos que describen parte de estas experiencias:
En el Libro de Mormón, Alma 8:18 describe cómo el
Señor instruyó al profeta Alma para ir por su meta “por otro camino”. Tal vez
recuerden que teníamos dos opciones originalmente mientras buscábamos una cura
para la leucemia mieloide aguda – una opción de quimioterapia y una opción de
trasplante de médula ósea. Luego de muchos días de estudio, meditación y
oración sentimos optar por la ruta de la quimioterapia. Ahora, similar a Alma
(¡sin comparación entre Shane & Alma!), el Señor ha mandado que tratemos
otro camino—trasplante de médula ósea. Más adelante en el capítulo leemos, “Y
se hizo así para que el Señor manifestara su poder en ellos.” Creemos que al
prestar atención durante este proceso, tendremos ojos para ver el poder del
Señor—tanto a lo largo del viaje como en los resultados finales.
