We finished the chemotherapy aimed at putting the leukemia into remission. The team has worked to advance a matching donor. We tolerated the chemotherapy well. The team approved me for discharge after just a week in the hospital. Eating became enjoyable again:). On to transplant...
Except for the fever that ensued after about a week at home. For a person with no immune system, a fever can represent a life-threatening event. The body does not have a way to fight whatever has caused the fever. A fever grants a patient like me an automatic pass to the hospital (kind of like "go directly to jail, do not pass go" in Monopoly). After nearly a week on multiple, very strong antibiotics, we have begun talking about the possibility of going home once again. We give thanks for knowledgeable doctors and nurses who know what to do to help preserve life.
During this week I have begun receiving blood products, both platelets (help stop bleeding in our bodies) and red blood cells (carry oxygen throughout the body). I will continue receiving these life-sustaining donations from others until my own bone marrow begins to produce on its own again (1-2 weeks from now most likely).
As I contemplated the susceptibilities of the body when in a weakened state, and the responses needed to once again strengthen it, I remembered some patterns in scripture that I can apply to my life.
"For behold, they saw that the strength of the Lamanites was as great as their strength, even man for man. And thus had they fallen into this great transgression; yea, thus had they become weak, because of their transgression." Helaman 4:26 When I make mistakes, and especially when I don't fix them quickly, I become weak. In a weakened condition, I can sometimes make other mistakes I wouldn't normally make. Conversely, when I obey God's commandments, I am strengthened as in 1 Nephi 17:3. In a strengthened condition I can do things that I can't normally do on my own.
At times we find that our enemies attempt to attack us in places of former weakness.
"And in their weakest fortifications he did place the greater number of men; and thus he did fortify and strengthen the land..." Alma 48:9 "But behold, to their astonishment, the city of Noah, which had hitherto been a weak place, had now, by the means of Moroni, become strong, yea, even to exceed the strength of the city Ammonihah." Alma 49:14
As I think about where I have personally struggled in times past, I hope to build special fortifications such that I cannot fall there again. What do stronger fortifications look like for me? At home? At work? In my relationships with other people? When I find myself alone?
May we watch out for fevers as they give early warning signs that something is amiss. May we reach for appropriate antibiotics to fight off unwanted infections. May we strengthen ourselves and others in places of former vulnerability. And may we allow Him who never tires to strengthen us in all the ways that He can.
Thank you for your kind thoughts, words, and deeds. You have indeed strengthened my family and me. We feel very grateful.
